Good planning is essential

If it becomes absolutely necessary to transport a COVID-19 patient within a hospital or care facility, special protective measures must be considered.

According to the Robert Koch Institute, the same recommendations apply when transporting a COVID-19 patient within a hospital or care facility. In accordance with this, several important points must be observed before, during and after the transport of a person suffering from COVID-19.

Prior to transport

  • Firstly, it should be checked whether it is absolutely necessary to transport the COVID-19 patient within the hospital or care home.
  • If it is absolutely necessary, the target area must be informed accordingly in advance.
  • Sick people should be transported individually.
  • If the state of health of the sick person allows, they should wear a face mask.
  • Staff should wear personal protective equipment, including protective gowns, disposable gloves, at least an FFP2 mask and protective goggles during transport.

During transport

  • In hospitals, contact with other patients and visitors should be avoided. In care homes, it’s also important not to come into contact with other residents and visitors.

After transport

  • Immediately after the necessary measures have been taken in the target area, all contact surfaces as well as the means of transport must be thoroughly disinfected by wiping them down with a surface disinfectant with a proven at least limited virucidal agent.
